Hypnotic embrace
Walking through the backstreets, the veins of Varanasi is like sleepwalking as wonderful images dance in front of your eyes and your senses are lured by the smells and colors swirling around you. One moment you see smiling children running along the cobblestone paths laughing and playing, the next you see wandering wild cows and monkeys perched on ledges staring down in curiosity. Perhaps around the corner there sits a sadhu or holy person with a basket of Cobras who will show you how he can hypnotize them with the movement of his hands... Yesterday we took an evening boat ride on the Ganga (Ganges) lit candles on the water to offer prayers and thanks for our loved ones near and far. As the day fell and the night awakened we floated past fire ceremonies with brilliant colors and many people chanting mantras in unison, like vibrations reaching out to the heavens. After the boat ride we walked a short distance along the ghats, passed the burning ghats...where every evening bodies are cremated atop carefully weighed pyres of wood. The cost of the cremation depends on the type of wood being used, sandalwood being the most expensive. We saw three pyres burning and carefully and respectfully passed by while looking in suspended time as you can see the bodies being consumed by the flame. On one of our first nights walking the ghats we saw a sadhu doing meditation right next to the fires and we watched as the smoke appeared to almost pass through his body. He appeared as if he was in a deep trance and was somehow positioned so the spirits of the recently deceased were connecting to a physical body one last time before they arose towards the sky. This sight and feeling was intense. Well, we plan on leaving Varanasi Sunday morning at 0040 and will take a 12 hour train to New Delhi and then a 15 hour bus ride North into the mountains to the city of Kullu...not far from Kashmir, Pakistan and Tajikistan. From Kullu we will bike ~40 km to Manali, which is another spiritual center in India, as well as a jumping off spot for many adventure/outdoor activities. They have river rafting, rock climbing, canyoning, mountain climbing, paragliding and zorbing (a crazy sounding experience in which you are taken to the top of a very large hill, placed inside a giant padded balloon type contraption, secured :) and then rolled down the hill...I'm guessing this is another one of those activities best done while fasting. The other awesome thing about this place is that there are Hot springs everywhere as well as incredible mountain range and valley views. We've heard good things, so we'll let you know when we arrive. We'll probably stay in Manali for a week and then spend 1-2 weeks biking down and up and over mountain passes as high as 15,000 feet...I'm just excited that our bikes are multi-geared bikes to help us with this endeavor as almost all the bicycles in India are fixed gear single speed, these people have legs of steel. Our destination from Manali through the mountains will take us back towards the foothills, into a place called Rishikesh..where the Beatles once stayed and there are many ashrams ( retreat centers that offer meditation, yoga and philosophical talks on peace, happiness and enlightenment). We'll probably stay here a least 2 weeks and also look for a Vipassana session 3-10 days of silent meditation, where no one speaks only focusing on quieting the mind and bringing awareness into the body. Speaking of, the 2 hour morning yoga has been very cleansing and after each session I'm very glad that I offered that respect to my temple. For the last 4 days I'll be doing 4 hours of yoga a day as well as 1 hour music lessons. So much to do or not do here in Varanasi, so many mysteries to explore and questions to be answered. I hope each of you is finding serenity and direction in your life as well as happiness in this moment. Please be well and know we are thinking of you. Take care, Will and Donavon

Road to the City of Life - Varanasi
Hello family and friends, sorry it's been so long since our last/1st update but much has happened since our last writing and we've finally reached a place with good internet connection. Since our last message we traveled over 500 miles (more than 300 hundred by cycle and around 200 by train). We came through a state know as Jharkhand which is very remote and we saw no other foreign tourist for almost 3 weeks. During this time we struggled to learn how to cycle safely on the roads and during the day in India. There are virtually no road rules in India and the horns are a constant reminder to stay alert if you want to stay alive. Keep close to the edge get ready to go off road if big trucks are passing...funny how some of the trucks love to blow their very loud horns right as they pass you, which gives you a intense brain piercing resonation for several seconds afterwards. On the days we cycle we try to start at around 5-6am because by 8:30am the heat can be unbearable. In the first 2 weeks we had a total of about 2 hours rain, which was very welcomed. Now that we are in Varanasi the rain has started to come more consistently and it has really help cool things down :) Anyway, the state we just came out of was most interesting in the fact that people couldn't believe 2 crazy cyclists would bike thorough India in the summer, especially through remote areas...we were actually interviewed by an inter/national news station. We stopped in a place called Betla N.P. where we there are supposedly 17 or more tigers but we only saw a "tiger's den", but many monkeys, antelopes, some peacocks and a couple of wolves..we also rode an elephant I liked to call Bumpy (if you ever ridden a horse- imagine this except your body constantly gyrates in a 360 degree motion: note - don't eat before this experience.
Well, we've reached the city of Varanasi...one of the oldest and longest continually inhabited cities in the world, right on the river Ganges. This place is incredible, we've been here for 3 days and arrived with the full moon. This place has nightly ceremonies at 7pm where they pray and chant along the river and then the people walk to the river and through flowers and light floating candles in the water...incredible. There are holy people and temples everywhere and everyone offering many things. Donavon and I had been looking for a place to get a massage after all our bike riding but like many things here the massage came to us; we were walking towards the river and a man reached out his hand to shake and then starts massaging my fingers working his way to my arm and then my shoulder, I closed my eyes and just felt the energy flowing from his hands to release tension in my sore/tight muscles. Next thing I know, I'm lying down next to river getting an amazing massage. We've been invited by many people to have tea and talk about being in the moment and finding peace and harmony in life and just thinking of this brings a smile to my heart, my soul has brought me here and I'm so thankful. Well friends, I think I'll stop here but please enjoy some of our photos and we;ll try to post more stories and pictures in the coming weeks. We will stay in Varanasi at least 5 more days doing 2 hour morning yoga sessions and then just exploring the endless labyrinths of stores and temples, as well as walking along the Ganges. Please be well, be in this moment -loving yourself and sending a smile to those around you. Love to you, Will and Donavon
P.S. Donavon got an awesome tattoo today and we are so excited about it, something he's wanted for a while and something he'll never forget!

Indian Summer
Welcome vicarious travellers to the blog of Will and Donavon's journey through India, Nepal and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand). Please join us on our adventure and feel free to send any comments or just a message to say hello along our way.
About 1 year ago I started thinking where the next part of the world to explore would be; I was looking for some direction in life and hoping to find some insight to unanswered questions and an opportunity to comtinue exploring our planets mysterious places. I remember reading a Native American book, Seven Arrows which spoke about the four directions of our planet and what each one could symbolize for a person. Each path could unfold layers of life and reveal possibilities for growth: North symbolizing Wisdom; South symbolizing Heart and Passion; West symbolizing Growth and East symbolizing Insight and Illumination.
Each of these directions have been travelled except for the East which, this part of the world being known for enlightenment and inner awareness. I was hoping that our travels would allow me to step back, examine my life and see which path this present journey would take me on. ...And here we are in India!!
So, we left May 31st for a 20 hour flight to Kolkata, with a short layover in Frankfurt Germany. We arrived around 11:30 to a relatively pleasant weather, slightly humid and bustling with people..even at this time of the night. All our luggage arrived safely and we packed our bikes into a small Taxi and went searching for a hotel. Did I mention this was a bicycle touring trip? Flashing forward 6 days, sitting in Bishnapur in a small internet cafe Donavon says I have 2 minutes, so I will continue the first 5 days with the next entry. Please stay tuned for some hair raising, near death stories which made us laugh and cry but has already been so enriching!
